Not All Bulldogs Are Created Equal!

Each Bulldog has its own distinctive
personality as well as can have any
number of health issues.  You should
research the breed and breeders
before you consider any puppy or adult
bulldog.  The health issues can be quite
expensive if you chose a bulldog from a
breeder who does not understand the
genetics and continues to pass
unhealthy traits in their breeding
programs.  Please take the time to read
on some of the bulldog health issues
below to better understand more about
the needs and requirements of this
breed.

HEALTH CARE
Why should you choose an AKC registered puppy?

There are many dog registries out there.  But as someone
looking for a quality, purebred puppy, you should be aware
they are not all equal.

The oldest and most trusted purebred dog registry in the
United States is the American Kennel Club, or AKC.

AKC is the only registry that has a MANDATORY requirement
that all sires (used frequently) have a DNA sample on file with
the AKC.  With these DNA samples, AKC has genetic proof of
the puppy’s purebred lineage.  No other registry does this.

But, the commercial dog industry (puppy mills, brokers, pet
shops, etc.) face a serious problem--they need to provide
“papers” and “pedigrees” so they can tell the public their
puppies are “registered”.  But they are unable to meet AKC’s
strict DNA requirements.  So, over the years, they’ve created
their own “breeder friendly” registries!!

These registries, such as APR, ACA,  APRI, and UABR have
no mandatory DNA testing requirements.  Nor do they demand
any real proof the dog is a purebred.  In fact, most ask only for
the “word” of the breeder that the dog is a purebred.
Because of these lax standards,  these pet registries are often
used to register and get fraudulent pedigrees for dogs that
have been stolen! In addition, they are also used to register
cross-bred dogs as full, purebred English Bulldogs.

Here is APR’s (one of the biggest of these registries)
statement of requirements to register a dog as a “purebred”
from their website:

“When  an application is received by our office and accepted,
we issue  a registration certificate. From that moment on the
animal is  considered a registered animal. On the application
the owner has  certified that the dog or cat is a purebred
representative of  the breed. We take his word for it. We have
registered thousands of dogs and cats in  the United States,
Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico and overseas, just to name a
few.”

To read their complete application for yourself, go here.  For
$15, you could literally (and many unethical breeders do)
register anything as a purebred English Bulldog.

If you want to know for certain you are getting a genuine
purebred English Bulldog, make sure you only buy an AKC
registered pup.
